Position Summary:

Under direct supervision of the registered pharmacist, the pharmacy technician engages in the preparation, control and distribution of medications. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma. • Previous pharmacy technician experience preferred.

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician license. • Illinois Pharmacy Technician Certification** **Beginning on January 1, 2010, within 2 years after being employed as a registered technician, a pharmacy technician must become certified by successfully passing the Pharmacy Technician  certification Board (PTCB) examination or another Board-approved pharmacy technician examination in order to continue to perform pharmacy technician's duties. This requirement does not apply to pharmacy technicians hired prior to January 1, 2008.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Excellent interpersonal skills. • Organized and detail oriented. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. • Ability to transport lightweight supplies. • Ability to perform duties carefully with direction. • Requires understanding that age specific patient care is provided with a special recognition for the neonate, child, and geriatric age groups and that appropriate age-specific knowledge in the performance of their distributive activities is important to the provision of pharmacy service. • Typing

Essential Functions:

• Processes new and refill orders
• Restocks automated dispensing cabinets according to current department procedures
• Compounds medications as needed
• Understands the pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing and dispensing of prescriptions
• Performs weight/volume calculations necessary to prepare compounded prescriptions
• Prepares sterile admixtures using aseptic technique under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist
• Demonstrates understanding of aseptic technique according to accepted protocols and procedures outlined by the department
• Performs unit dose cart fills and exchanges
• Responds to phone call inquiries and 'walk up' service requests, resolving issues or directing them appropriately
• Performs general Pharmacy tasks related to medication control, delivery, and processing
• Works with pharmacist to maintain efficient work flow, e.g. reroute medications when patients are transferred, and assist in prioritizing work load
• Performs emergency/crash cart restocking according to department protocols
• Delivers medications to nursing units
• Restocks supplies in selected areas as necessary
• Delivers controlled substances to nursing units and/or departments per protocol
